Recycled FashionBy Carol Alt / Post / June 6, 2016
It’s often said that the older generations tend to look out of touch, sometimes even behind the times in fashion. I can definitely understand that. Yesterday, while shopping in Greenwich Village, I saw store after store displaying the exact fashions I was wearing in the 1970s. Every window caught my eye, and it got me thinking. Didn’t I get rid of all these clothes the first time around? Aren’t these all way more expensive than they were when I was throwing them out? It definitely seems kind of crazy. Styles I wore in the 60s and 70s are now going for ten times the asking price they once did, and realizing that took the fun out of the day.
Now to the point of older folks looking out of touch. The way I figure, fashion trends definitely come and go. Nothing I saw in my day of shopping was worthy of pulling my wallet out, and that’s when it dawned on me. Older people are wearing fashions that yes, still look nice, but not in style. They’re not old enough to be BACK in style, either. When the fashion trends reflect what looked good forty years ago, clothes ten or twenty years old can look out of place.
And now, to reflect that, everything seems to be rolling back full circle to “1970s hippie” style. I know, because I was there! I think I still am, in some ways. When they bring back Groucho I’m gonna be totally depressed! Most of the old folks have been there and done that, just like me. Not only have I been there and done that, I’ve been there and I’m all done, thanks!
When I think about the modern generation of young people, those in their 20s and 30s walking around with disposable income and nothing of their “own” to wear it baffles me. We’re catering to a new generation with styles that have literally been there AND done that, and they’re eating it up. Looking in my closet would seem like a gold mine to some adventurous young folks! Jeepers it makes me feel like an old lady. Where’s my cane?
I guess I feel that way because I won’t part with my money just to re-buy things I’ve already owned. Maybe it’s because I simply don’t know how to wear yesterday’s fashions in a way that looks appropriate and sexy enough to make me feel good. Maybe I need to hire a 20 year-old stylist…
